CODE OF BEHAVIOUR


Aims of the Code
  1. In order to provide the best primary education, the school must be a well ordered and disciplined place. This code of behaviour has been drawn up to ensure its smooth running and to provide an environment where the child is happy and secure. The code is also a framework for providing good relationships and close co-operation between pupils, teachers, parents/guardians and Board of Management.
  2. The code was created to foster a friendly, happy atmosphere leading to
    1. Self motivation.
    2. Independence and Initiative.
    3. Toleration of and respect for others and their property.
    4. Self-esteem.
    5. Good listening, learning and working habits.
    6. Rational appraisal of what is right and wrong.
    7. A spirit of co-operation at work and play.
    8. Creation of a positive learning environment

Principles of the Code
  1. The code promotes constructive behaviour and discourages unacceptable behaviour.
  2. code places a greater emphasis on rewards than on sanctions and the ideal is that pupils will acquire the skills of self - discipline.
  3. Sanctions are imposed to maintain good order and to discourage offenders.
  4. In imposing a sanction it is the misbehaviour which is unacceptable and not the individual
  5. School recognises the variety of differences between children and the need to accommodate same.
  6. Parents should accept responsibility for the behaviour of their children.
  7. School rules are kept to a minimum and are devised with regard for the health, safety and welfare of all members of the school community.

Behaviour in Class
  1. Courtesy and respect for others is the basis for classroom behaviour in which children can learn in a secure safe atmosphere.
  2. Pupils will co-operate with instructions given by the teacher.
  3. Pupils will complete assigned work both at school and at home. The work may be written / oral.
  4. Pupils will bring to school each day all books, copies and materials necessary to do their work properly.
  5. Pupils will leave and return to classrooms in an orderly fashion.
  6. Pupils are expected to wear the correct uniform each day.

Behaviour in the Playground and School Environment
  1. For reasons of safety and to minimise accidents, pupils will move about the school in an orderly fashion.
  2. Children must not behave in any way which endangers themselves or others.
  3. Any behaviour which interferes with other children at play is not permitted and teachers must be told, so that the matter can be dealt with effectively.
  4. Pupils must remain within the playground boundaries during breaks.
  5. Permission must be sought to re-enter school buildings from supervising teachers.
  6. Pupils must keep playgrounds litter free.
  7. Children must line up in an orderly manner at the end of the breaks.
  8. Pupils must accept the authority of all teachers in the school.
  9. Pupils must have due respect for all Special Needs Assistants, Classroom Assistants and all other employees of the school.
  10. A child involved in any accident or hurt in any way must report or be reported to the teacher on yard supervision or to any other available teacher. The teacher may decide to attend to the injuries or send the child to the school First Aid Room to be attended by a member of the ancillary staff. When necessary, the child may be brought to a doctor or hospital. Where suitable, parents will be informed or asked to bring the child home or the teacher may arrange for the child to be brought home.

Examples of Misbehaviour
  1. Talking in class when specifically asked not to.
  2. Ignoring teacher’s instructions.
  3. Distracting or constant talking to other pupils.
  4. Not carrying out or not completing assigned work either in school or for homework without good reason.
  5. Lying or stealing.
  6. Use of bad language.
  7. Assault or verbal abuse of another child or teacher.
  8. Bullying or intimidation, including by phone, text or internet on the school property or on the way to and from school
  9. Games considered to be dangerous to oneself or others.
  10. Fighting, kicking, pushing or spitting.
  11. Unruliness on corridors.
  12. Vandalism, loss or theft of school property.
  13. Pupils leaving school grounds without permission.
  14. Persistent infringement of school rules.

School Rules

If the school is to function efficiently it is necessary that the rules and regulations are clearly stated and enforced.

  1. Respect and Courtesy.
    All pupils are expected to treat staff, their fellow pupils and visitors with respect and courtesy at all times.
  2. Attendance:
    1. The official opening time is 9.20 a.m. Class ends at 3.00 p.m.
    2. No responsibility is accepted for the pupils outside of these times.
    3. Pupils should not be on the school grounds / premises when school is not in operation.
  3. Absence:
    1. Every absence of a child must be accounted for either by forwarding a note or making contact with class teacher.
    2. If parents decide that a child needs to leave school early on any day, a written note must be given to the class teacher and parents / guardians must collect child at classroom door or from the school office.
  4. Medical:
    1. The class teacher should be informed if your child has a medical complaint which may affect him / her in school.
    2. Any infectious illness should be notified to the school immediately.
    3. If both parents are absent from home, arrangements should be made for someone to look after child in the event of him / her being sent home unexpectedly due to illness or accident.
    4. Pupils may be referred, with parents / guardians consent, for medical, psychological or educational assessment.
  5. Health and Safety:
    1. Pupils should be clean and neat.
    2. Attention should be paid especially to cleanliness of hair.
    3. Children should have a nutritious lunch each day.
    4. Chewing gum, crisps, sugary foods and fizzy drinks are not allowed.
    5. Smoking prohibited on school premises and grounds.
    6. Towards preventing accidents, pupils may wear stud earrings only and no other jewellery is allowed (i.e. rings, necklaces, bracelets etc.)
    7. Makeup is not allowed
    8. Cars are not allowed in school grounds.
    9. Cars should not park near school gates or in bus bay.
    10. Physical Education
      1. For P.E. shorts, top and runners or tracksuit and runners must be worn.
      2. Children who are unable to take part due to sickness or injury should have a note from parents / guardians.
      3. No jewellery to be worn during P.E. lessons or during team games
    11. Mobile phones are not allowed
  6. Personal and School Property:
    1. Children must have their names on all personal property such as school books, copies, coats, musical instruments etc.
    2. Pupils must respect all school property.
    3. Pupils must keep the school environment clean and litter free. Pupils are expected to cooperate fully in any organised clean up activities.
  7. Homework:
    1. It is the policy of the school to assign homework on a regular basis. Teachers will make every effort to match the curriculum to the aptitude of the pupils.
    2. Parents must check and sign homework notebook each night.
    3. Parents can help with homework by
      1. Providing suitable working conditions at home.
      2. Helping their child organise their time to best advantage so that things are not left to the last minute or even forgotten.
      3. Taking a positive and active interest in their child’s work at home rather than just insisting that it is done.
      4. Letting the class teacher know if there are any problems with homework that cannot be resolved at home.
  8. Rewards for Good Behaviour:
    Teachers may adopt different rewards from the following list of possible strategies - oral and written.
    1. Praise from the teacher and the Principal.
    2. Behaviour record chart in classroom - winning group/team is relieved of some homework.
    3. A pupil of the week/year award.
    4. Small prizes, merit lists, merit stars to be presented at Assembly or in class.
    5. Homework off once a month for those children whose names are not on the Yard Discipline Book.
    6. Certificates given out each month to pupils who have behaved consistently well.
    7. Two pupil of the week class trophies to be presented for good behaviour.
    8. Night off homework.
    9. Extra school privileges or responsibilities.
    10. Standardised note of praise (+ small reward on occasion).
    11. Certificate of good behaviour at the end of the year.
    12. B.O.M. / Parents Association to sponsor Pupils Of The Year Scheme.
  9. Sanctions:

    Sanctions are necessary to register disapproval of unacceptable behaviour. They contain a degree of flexibility to take account of individual circumstances.

    When misbehaviour occurs the following is a list of possible sanctions or strategies used and the procedures to be adopted for solving same.

    1. The pupil is made aware that his / her behaviour is unacceptable.
    2. The child receives verbal reprimand from teacher and is advised on how to improve.
    3. The child may be temporarily separated from peers, friends and others (e.g. class group).
    4. For misbehaviour in yard, the child's name may be entered in Yard Discipline Book.
    5. Additional homework or a written assignment re his / her inappropriate behaviour to be prescribed.
    6. Badly presented or incomplete homework may have to be re-done.
    7. A note or comment on misbehaviour may be written on child's homework notebook to be signed by parents / guardians.
    8. After three such notes in homework journal, a standard letter may be sent to parents / guardians, which will be signed and returned to teacher.
    9. If the misbehaviour is serious, the standard letter may be sent without any prior note in child's homework notebook.
    10. Pupil is referred to Principal.
    11. Children who continue to disrupt class - parents / guardians will be asked to meet with class teacher.
    12. If problem persists parents / guardians, asked to meet with Principal and if problem continues it may be necessary to have ongoing discussions.
    13. For serious misbehaviour, after consultation with parents / guardians, child may be deprived of privileges.
    14. In instances of repeated serious misbehaviour, the parents / guardians will be requested to meet with the Chairperson of B.O. M. and the Principal and will be asked to give an undertaking that the pupil will behave in an acceptable manner in the future.
    15. If the serious misbehaviour continues, the B.O.M. may suspend the pupil for a temporary period up to a maximum of three days.
    16. A special decision of the B.O.M. is necessary to authorize a further period of suspension up to a maximum of ten school days and in exceptional circumstances may authorize a further period of suspension.
    17. Expulsion may be considered in an extreme case.
    18. In the case of gross misbehaviour, the B.O.M., having informed parents / guardians, may authorise the Chairperson or Principal to sanction an immediate suspension.
    19. Recompense is expected to be made by pupils / parents / guardians for damage to, loss or theft of property.
    20. Additional Information:
      1. Teachers shall keep a written record of all instances of serious misbehaviour as well as a record of improvements in the behaviour of disruptive pupils.
      2. A whole class is not punished because of one child's / small group's misbehaviour save in exceptional circumstances.
      3. If misbehaviour occurs at lunch time or at any other time when another teacher is in charge, that teacher may impose a sanction and inform the class teacher of same.
